AREAS AFFECTED: Shasta Lake Area / Northern Shasta County; Northern Sacramento Valley; Mountains Southwestern Shasta County to Western Colusa County
DESCRIPTION: At 743 PM PDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from Castle Crag to Mountain Gate to near Ono. Movement was west at 10 mph. HAZARD...Winds in excess of 30 mph and pea size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include... Redding, Shasta Dam, Shasta Lake, Lakehead, Sugarloaf, Keswick, Lakehead-Lakeshore, Pollard Flat, Central Valley, Whiskeytown, Castle Crag, Centerville, Central Valley Cdp, Igo, Ono, Fisher, O'brien, Sims, Vollmers, and Mountain Gate.
INSTRUCTION: If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. If on or near Lake Shasta, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.

Precipitation in the form of water droplets is called rain.
Rain generally has a tendency to fall with less intensity over a greater period
of time, and when rainfall is more severe it is usually less sustained.
Rain is the most common form of precipitation and happens with greater frequency
depending on the season and regional influences. Cities have been shown to have
an observable effect on rainfall, due to an effect called the urban heat island.
Compared to upwind, monthly rainfall between twenty and forty miles downwind of
cities is 30% greater.
