Winter Storm Warning issued February 16 at 6:10PM MST until February 19 at 5:00AM MST by NWS Salt Lake City UT
AREAS AFFECTED: Wasatch Mountains I-80 North; Wasatch Mountains South of I-80; Western Uinta Mountains
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Heavy snow. Total snow accumulations between 1 and 2 feet with locally higher accumulations up to 3 feet across the upper Cottonwoods and Bear River Mountains. Winds gusting as high as 65 mph. * WHERE...The Wasatch Mountains, and Western Uinta Mountains. * WHEN...Until 5 AM MST Thursday. * IMPACTS...Winter driving conditions can be expected on all mountain routes. Traction restrictions are likely. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Two winter storms will impact the northern mountains through Thursday morning. The first storm will bring a period of moderate to heavy snow tonight into early Tuesday morning. The second, stronger storm will bring another round of moderate to heavy snow Wednesday into early Thursday morning.

Freezing rain is a condition where precipitation which has fallen in the form of
water droplets reaches temperatures which are below freezing and freezes upon
coming into contact
with surface objects. The result of this precipitation is a glaze of ice which
can be damaging to plants and man-made structures. A severe onset of freezing
rain which results in a very thick glaze of ice is known as an ice storm.

Hail is a form of precipitation which is recognized by large solid balls or
clumps of ice. Hail is created by thunderstorm clouds with strong updrafts of wind.
As the hailstones remain in the updraft, ice is deposited onto them until their
weight becomes heavy enough for them to fall to the earth's surface.
Hail storms can cause significant damage to crops, aircrafts, and man-made structures,
despite the fact that the duration is usually less than ten minutes.
