Winter Weather Advisory issued February 16 at 6:10PM MST until February 19 at 5:00AM MST by NWS Salt Lake City UT
AREAS AFFECTED: Wasatch Plateau/Book Cliffs; Central Mountains
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 8 and 18 inches, with locally up to 2 feet along the Manti-Skyline and Wasatch Plateau. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph through Monday night. * WHERE...Central Mountains and Wasatch Plateau/Book Cliffs. * WHEN...Until 5 AM MST Thursday. * IMPACTS...Winter driving conditions are likely. Traction laws may be enacted. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Two winter storms will impact the central mountains and Wasatch Plateau through Thursday morning. The first storm will bring a period of moderate to heavy snow tonight into early Tuesday morning. The second, stronger storm will bring another round of moderate to heavy snow Wednesday into early Thursday morning.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.
